A LONG AND SOMEWHAT SWEET TALE OF THE SOUTH

Downtown Nashville.  Hello Mr. Ed!

I've been away much too long and I probably should have posted, "Bloggy Break".  Well anyway, most of you knew that The Husband and I put together a quickie vacation once all of the chaos most of us call summer had passed.  I have to admit that I am in charge of doing the itinerary so if there were any mishaps I only have myself to blame.  And you know...wherever Blondie goes, adventure follows.

We flew into Nashville early last Saturday morning.  Who knew it was an hour flight from Chicago?  I definitely failed geography.  I thought Tennessee was somewhere above and west of Georgia.  Imagine my surprise when I woke up disgruntled (after falling asleep before take off) that I
hadn't been served orange juice.  I was told to buckle up for landing.  Mmmmm...I thought we were still somewhere over Indiana.

Loved Nashville.  We stayed at the Sheraton and had an evening out in the lively Music District.  One bar after another, huge windows open so that the live music spilled out on to the streets.  Everyone dancing and laughing and just enjoying the balmy night.  The Husband and I stopped at a few bars for a beer and a listen---it was so great.  I can't remember the last time I saw a live band and I love country music (and you, too, Blake and Luke).

Our cabin in Franklin, TN

We were off to Franklin, Tennessee early the next morning and this was my whole premise for going to Nashville.  I had heard about so many of the girly trips to do the shopping, antiquing and junking in Franklin and Leiper's Fork.  Now trust me, The Husband is all man but he's my BFF as well.  And lest you think he sullenly follows along behind me holding my purchases...think again.  He usually sits on benches outside the shops but also wanders into stores that carry either Indian artifacts or outfitter clothing and supplies.  These shops are abundant in the South.  Both of us happy.  Check.  Check.

We arrived in Franklin to a little cabin I had booked online.  It was on an 11 acre horse farm and the price was right.  Little did I know until we met the owner of the property that the little cabin you see above was actually physically moved from Kentucky by Wynonna Judd as a place for her little sister Ashley Judd to stay in.  The main house is just a few yards away.  We had a brief and limited tour of that house but it's inconsequential.  So Wynonna had many a party on the property and I could bore your with the stories, rather take up a lot of time and space on the blog, but man, if these walls could talk.

I loved the little cabin.  I have more pics on Instagram if you want a peek.  The bedroom was the only room upstairs and yes, this is the original Wynonna/Ashley/Shania Twain/Sheryl Crow bed.  I feel so cool!  Downstairs was a sweet little living room with a fireplace, a cute country kitchen and a full bath.  The owner, Caroline, loved to decorate in a sort of country/primitive way and it was perfect.  I loved that porch and swing---it looked out over the pasture with the horses she owns and boards.

The Barn

Across the road, more pasture, hay bales and critters.  Just too gorgeous.  Look at those blue skies!  The Husband kept marveling over the wood fences...just not something we see so much in the country area around us in the Midwest.   We were in  heaven.

Leiper's Fork, TN

We loved Franklin and spent the better part of two days there.  Another day we went to Leiper's Fork, a much smaller town in the opposite direction but one we were told not too miss.  There is a Puckett's Grocery in both towns...they are part restaurant, grocery store and live music venue in the evenings.  Here in Leiper's Fork, you'll find the very place you see above in my picture where a young Loretta Lynn got her start.  And I got my very first start on Chicken Fried Steak and Green Beans with mashed potatoes.  Seriously, I had it three times in Tennessee.  I totally embrace local food in spite of what it does to my svelte figure.  Hey--I'm on vacay!

After working off that lunch The Husband and I found this little area in back of Puckett's.  We sat down and shared a root beer. What a view.  I may copy and enlarge this.  It sums up the peacefulness of our time in Tennessee.

We left Franklin and headed to our next destination, Gatlinburg.  A stop in Knoxville was very cool.  A university town, it was vibrant and happening.  We had a dinner at this outdoor café and simply enjoyed watching people come and go along this little parkway.  A music student serenaded us with his cello.  I sort of wanted to stay longer!

Cabin in Gatlinburg, TN

I am to blame, um, be the one to have booked the cabin in Gatlinburg.  Online it looked so rustic and romantic.  Nestled in the woods, secluded and in the middle of nature and all it's beasts...er, flora and fauna.  I'll cut to the chase.  I'm terrified of bears.  Have been and always will be. although I've never been in a place where I could even encounter a bear until this trip.  And I honestly never thought that they were so 'out there' when I booked.  To heighten my apprehension, one of the first places we visited, was an artisan shop up in the hills.  The owner, a local elderly lady told us that black bears were an everyday sight in her parking lot as they crossed the roads from a river to the woods.  Believe me, I had one eye on the door the whole time we were there.  And we were told time after time, don't bother them and they won't bother you.  Still...

The biggest plus of our cabin was the large hot tub on the balcony.  No way up or down, just off the studio.  But of course, I hear bears can climb trees.  Not too long after we arrived we were leaning over this balcony and I thought I was looking at turkeys on the ground below...turkeys without those big feathers.  And then three of them flew into the trees above us about 40 feet away.  Can turkeys fly?  No, vultures can and do.  I thought I was going to be identifying all sorts of pretty songbirds native of the south.  No.  Not Blondie.  Where Blondie goes, disaster follows.

In my defense, the second night there The Husband fell asleep about 7 or 9 o'clock and I paced our entire 500 square feet of cabin.  Finally I grabbed a towel, stripped off my clothes (no bathing suit, its all in storage somewhere in Michigan) and hopped into the hot tub.  A glass of wine in hand, I simply floated and watched the bubbles and lights.  A half hour of relaxation and liberation.  I know I sound lame. but it was a little victory.

You might remember that The Husband took a huge hiking trip through Colorado with our sons and a few other guys back in May.  They really roughed it and he is so keen on hiking again.  He so wanted to do a hike in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and I really pushed myself to go along with it.  I couldn't pinpoint my apprehension and anxiety.  Having only a limited variety and amount  of shoes with me running the gamut of flip flops to ridiculously high heels, we went to an outfitter and I bought these sort of comfy trail/everyday walking type of shoes.  Aren't they cute?  I'll get a lot of use out of them.  But I didn't do the hike...I simply confessed to The Husband while literally feeling sick to my stomach that I had too many fears...fear of lions and tigers and bears, fear of not being in enough shape to do the long hike, fearing my asthma would hamper me, fear that anxiety would feed on anxiety and I would simply hyperventilate.  And I finally stood up straight and said, "This is your thing, not mine.  I can't be your companion in this anymore than I could be with you golfing 30 years ago. Do it alone if you want but don't bring me down."  He went and I huddled on the bed feeling like crap.  And then I thought of something I read recently and it will sound strange at first.  Don't blame others for the judgment you think they are passing on you.  You control your thoughts and you shouldn't buy into that.  It's all how you perceive it and YOU make that choice as to what you believe.  So...if I felt The Husband was thinking badly of me for not loving 'nature' as he did, how was I going to accept that?  I had to simply admit it wasn't for me.  I didn't want to so much as take a walk outside that cabin because of my fear, imagined or not.  Ultimately I accepted that and I know that's just me.  No more apologies.  Can you face your fears and get past them?  Well that's a subject for another post.  End of story.  And oh,  I was SO up and ready to leave this morning.  Ha!

We thought this kitty was part of the birdbath.  It was real and just getting  little drink!

Sorry to have gotten so philosophical when I already have so many pics.  I wanted to write a post in midstream but was so exhausted in the evenings.  I actually made dinner in many of the places we stayed.  We would be up early in the morning, grab something quick, i.e. unhealthy, have lunch in town and then need something for dinner at night when we just didn't want to go back out.

Gatlinburg is a mecca of artisans.  As we drove in from the west I was startled and very much disappointed to see family types of resorts and venues filled with dinner shows, museums and parks that were parodies...to me at least it seemed, of country "hillbilly" life.  I imagine it boosts the economy here but I simply didn't appreciate it.   As we got closer to the Smokies and our cabin we came upon the true art of these talented country folk.  We bought beautiful pieces of pottery, hand crafted carved wood treasures and so many mementos of our trip.

I loved a bustling part of Gatlinburg that was a variety restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and everything under the sun. The crowds were mostly adults (with most children back in school) and we fit right in with tourists from every place conceivable.  I love to talk to shop owners...The Husband usually has to drag me out.  He loves to chit chat with people around us in lines, restaurants and bars though.  This is a fun picture of us at a little Mexican rooftop bar.  I really loved this town. :)

We arrived at our condo in Asheville this morning.  It's in the 60's and it has been pouring buckets since we arrived with not much let up in sight.  I simply don't care.  I'm home.

I'll try to visit all of you soon.  I appreciate your comments and try to get around a bit everyday.  I truly believe blogging is a two way street.  :)  And it may sound contradictory but you can see more pics and snippets of the past 2 weeks on my Instagram...look for the button above.

Until next time...

Jane xx

What a beautiful vacation you and your husband had. I love the area you were in.

I am in LOVE with your new shoes, and would like to find them in my area. Would you share the brand and outfitter where they purchased?

Thanks.

Sounds like a great trip, Jane! I think the shopping and hot tub would be my favorite parts, too. Bears and hiking are not my thing either. I can sooo relate! The cottages look super charming, but after a while there really is no place like home!! Glad you had fun...love the pic of you guys. Off to find you on Instagram.

Welcome to the South, Jane! It's so funny to hear you speak of things we sometimes take for granted in our region - the wildlife (we see those turkey vultures in our trees on the river, and black bear is our state's animal, and some have even been seen in our residential areas right here in the capital city!), the wood fences, the countryside, etc. So glad you immersed yourself in the life and living (country fried steak - that's living and dying all at the same time, lol).
Enjoy your time in Asheville, see you on the flip side.

What a wonderful fun adventure! I have family who live in Tennessee, but don't get that way often enough, so it was a delight to see it all through your pictures! Adore the pic of the little kitty on the birdbath! So sweet!

The first time my son went camping in Colorado, I was afraid for him. He thought I was crazy when I said "you know there are wild things out there, right? Ha! Every time we hiked this summer and were out in the middle of nowhere all alone, I thought about what we could encounter or what could happen. Of course, we were perfectly fine and I do love hiking and nature. My ex-husband and I honeymooned in Gatlinburg. That was 28 years ago so I'm sure it has changed quite a lot since then. One of my best friends lives right outside of Asheville. Enjoy!

Sounds like you're having a wonderful vacation - except for the bears! I, too love the wooden fences you see in the south. There's some out here my way around horse farms, but more than likely you see metal fences instead of wooden ones. I've been to TN, but not to Gatlinburg. Tim vacationed there a few years ago when he was photographing a wedding. I know you're glad to be in Asheville but I hope the rain lets up so you can enjoy being out and about - sans bears.

Blondie, I enjoyed your pictures so much. I am not into hiking any longer....my feet and ankles bother me. I did hike when I was younger...not long hikes..just short ones in the state parks. I do love to smell the scent of pine trees. I adore outside cafes.... I would eat out all the time if I could. Take care of yourself and your sweetheart. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

I'm thrilled that you enjoyed our Nashville, Jane! Nashville is so much fun downtown, so much to do. Our son lives in the Gulch and no matter what time of night he walks his dog there are always people out on the streets so it is very safe to be out at night. And Franklin is where my daughter and I used to head at least once a month when we dropped her kids off at mother's day out. I love it. And Leiper's Fork is just a lovely place to visit. Oh the regrets that so many of us have that we didn't buy property there years ago when it was so cheap, because it certainly isn't now.

I was afraid that Gatlinburg might be a disappointment. We honeymooned there and in those days it was delightful, with many shops of homemade artisan crafts. But now you probably wouldn't catch a native Tennessean vacationing there. It is what we all call a tourist trap now, maybe, with everything marked Made in China? But back in the 50s when my parents would take us to stay on our way to visit family in Asheville, it was a place to sit on the balcony and hear the stream gurgle and eat pancakes at Pancake Pantry every morning! And we learned early the rules for not feeding the bears!

Come back to Nashville often!

It sounds like a great vacation so far! I totally understand your fear of bears. When I was a kid I read an account of a bear attack in readers digest and have been terrified of them ever since.
The walking shoes are so cute! What kind are they?

It's been so long since I've been to Tennessee, and I only went to Nashville. I've heard about Gatlinburg being touristy. It's a shame stuff like that happens to what used to be nice, genuine places.

So if you're afraid of bears, does that mean you're never going to visit me? ;).

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

I googled the Jambu shoe, and have found numerous outlets. Amazon carries them as well. Located a few retail stores in my Orlando area. I will be checking these out this week. Also noted the shoes come in wide, which I need.

Thanks again.

So fun to read about your trip Jane!
We were in Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountains when our kids were about 9.
Being kids they loved all the commercial stuff.
Oh the bears! I haven't seen one for 3 years now so I feel less concerned. I do know we have some around but black bears are generally not real aggressive. Now if we're talking grizzlies, well I would be terrified.
So glad you're having fun, I will text you soon about an October get away. Hugs friend,

Dear sweet Jane enjoy your stay in Asheville. I bet the leaves are just starting a change and the air is a delightful early Fall evening. Glad you had fun in Nashville, I guess no Lane Motor Museum? Love the rustic fun cabins you and hubby stayed at and Gatlinbug is always wonderful. I lived in Tennessee for a little over a year, the people are endearing. But oh my the calories in that sweet tea and those biscuits and gravy!
Love, love, love your cute blue shoes and you go girl... Stand up for your interests, not everyone needs to hike! Besides Jane who needs Bears chasing you in those adorable new shoes?!

Thanks for sharing, Jane! Sounds like a great time!
I guess you wouldn't care for the Bears outside my "little house in the big woods" of Pennsylvania , eh?
I haven't seen any bears here in Saigon, nor in Qatar last week. Plenty of monkeys in Cambodia! I'll be on the lookout for bears! Perhaps in Hong Kong or Macau?
Have fun!

We honeymooned in Cape Hatteras in 1972 and came back through Gatlinburg. It was wonderful way back in the day. We went back about 20 years later and it was creeping into total commercialism. It reminds me of Wisconsin Dells which is about 30 minutes from our house and just crazy w/ tourist trappings. Nashville is so much fun and so interesting! Sounds like the trip has been great fun so far. Safe travels!

Thanks for the vacay! It really does sound as if you have been on an adventure and I did smile when I started imagining Judy Garland saying "lions and tigers and bears... oh my!" in the Wizard of Oz. As for the hike, if it isn't your thing why make their adventure be miserable - that's what I always say anyway. Glad you are home and safe (and the feet can tell another tale!) xx

So it was such an interesting read.

I look forward to reading more blog posts and getting to know you better!

Tennessee is one of our states I've always wanted to visit. I should have done it when I lived in Ohio. . .so close. Oh well, I've seen a lot of where I'd like to go in your post today, Jane. Thank you! I understand your fear of bears, and I share it. Also, mountain lions. I know people say neither bears nor mountain lions like people and will try to stay away from them, but then you read stories of people hiking or running or whatever who are attacked without provocation. If I do hike, I stay really, really close to my man. He's not afraid of anything! Have a beautiful day. xo ~ Nancy

Your trip sounds fantastic, Jane! My nephew lives in Nashville. I went, with my sister to visit him last year, and it was awesome!
The cabin that used to be owned by the Judds would have been my favorite place. I love them!
I don't blame you for not going on the hike. I would be so out of shape, I'd collapse on the trails, and be left for food for the lions, tigers and bears. I would much rather go shopping. I'm NOT too out of shape to do that!!!
Great post!!

I have never been in those areas. Very interesting. Looks like you found many great shops and restaurants.
Jane I have to say something here regarding the hiking/not hiking situation you found yourself in.
We have a cabin that my BB Guy loves. They ride ATVs in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter. I have zero interest in doing either. Ever. I basically don't go to the cabin except for once or twice a year. This is fine for us. It works. He goes whenever he wants to.
Years ago when a group of friends were together for a weekend of snowmobiling they all kept bugging me to go with them. Just go they said...you will like it. They were relentless in their efforts to get me to go. I was getting annoyed and finally I said "You know what, I love to cross stitch. All of you are going to spend an afternoon with me cross stitching. No matter that you don't want to and are not interested. I like it so you have to try it". They all shut up after that.
We don't have to like the same things all the time. We are not the same people. Good for you that you didn't go. Getting over your fears is something you work on in your own way.

I love the woods of the South, and even the excitement of spotting a bear-I grew up hunting with my Dad during the Fall in the Rocky Mountains and he made it all seem like such an exciting adventure, I know if it hadn't been for him, my enthusiasm would not be like it is.
Your trip sounds just wonderful and these getaways are so good for ourselves and our marriages.

I'm so confused! I read this when it came up, commented on it almost as soon, and my comment didn't post here! Bah Humbug! I guess you thought I had deserted you, Jane! Never will happen!
I am very much in admiration of anyone who stands up and say, "This isn't my thing--it's yours, and I love you, you love me--but we don't have to be joined at the hip all the time! Go do your things, I'll do mine, if it's only lying down and reading my book!"
I wasn't like that, though, I think because we got married so young. I wasn't my own person yet. No, not at all. (Not even sure I am, now, even after nearly 50 years!)I felt I had to be interested in almost everything hubby did--hunting, fishing, music, baseball, football-- you know--whatever, I followed his lead! (Well, I HAD been fishing with my daddy ever since I was 3 years old, and because of Daddy, I loved it, already!!) And I had been playing piano, by ear, since I was three-and my husband played by ear, too--the guitar and banjo After our kids were in their teens and could be trusted to stay alone---then I could begin doing things I hadn't before. All those year, hubby went but I had to be home with our "kidlets!"
So, then, when hubby went hunting, I went with him, whether I took my gun or not--but I could and did shot when I wanted to (Yep--a country girl, hunting and fishing!). When he went and played music, (since I was a musician, too, before I married him),I started grabbing my guitar or keyboards, and went, too, People have really seemed to love hearing and watching us sing and play with each other, and to one another all these years.
So it has worked out fine, (for the most part--nothing's perfect!) Then, I don't know if it's a man thing or not--but I took art classes, was interested in many other things and would have loved for him to tagged along with me, and just been there for me, but he didn't...so I kind of felt...well, my interests weren't as important to him. But, as I said--he just didn't really even think about it, it wasn't a deliberate hurt. In the grand scheme of things, we all have different interests, and every one of us is different.
You had some great really pictures in here--and I loved your shoes, too, but I'll never even pretend to be hiking! Wish I could. I love nature, like you, and the lions, tigers and bears thing doesn't throw me into a panic--it's just I'm not up to it physically anymore. Hubby and I used to take our kids to Asheville. and Cherokee and Gatlinburg every year we had a vacation An 8 hour drive! "Santa Land" in Asheville, and we took them there--they loved it, of course.

I'm so glad you got home, and got back in your comfort zone==and your own bed! I know the condo is yours, too--but it's just not the same, is it? Whoever first said, "There's NO place like home!" really nailed it, didn't they!
Love you, Jane! Don't know why this didn't post the first time--but I hope it does this time. I usually never miss commenting, and I don't know why it didn't the evening after you posted it. Ah--but the Internets--SO mysterious! ;)

Jane, this sounds like such a wonderful trip! I love Nashville and Franklin! We have friends who live there and we've visited twice. There's so much to do and those rolling hills are just amazing. I wouldn't worry that you don't want to hike. My husband loves to camp...and when I say camp...he likes to go where there are no other human beings for miles. He calls it wilderness camping. I say, "Where's the shower?" We don't go together and we are both ok with that. I do find that as I'm getting older (but dangit not too old) anxiety is slowing me down a little. I think it's important that we not let it get the best of us though. Maybe it's hormones? We can blame it on that.

Hi Jane,
I love how real life comes through in your vacation post. Dealing with honestly not wanting to disappoint yourself or your husband: i can understand how there was part of you that probably wanted to go on that hike, but knowing what would likely happen if you did. I am glad you figured out what was going to work for both of you.
Your vacation looks wonderful. I see Gerry and I maybe in a few years time on this journey. not sure yet what is in store. It's not quite the same for me but i like reading about other people's successes and happiness, and knowing it is possible. xx Nancy

Love Franklin, hate Gatlinburg although it used to be nice many years ago. I Love Asheville, too, hope you don't get too wet! Safe travels back to Chicago.

I am just back to blogging, Jane, and read every word to catch up with you. I finally gave up trying to do things to make the hubby happy (that I really hated to do) and it feels so good-then I don't have to feel guilty doing something I love that he doesn't enjoy, too. Marriage is all about finding what works for each of us.

Love your pictures and love that you were able to get away. Sounds like a perfect few days. Bears or no bears. xo Diana

ps.Your blog is so much easier to read-and I forgot to tell you that. It looks great!
