I love taking snaps of the dogs in the winter. They are always doing what I want to be doing. I can be wide awake in the morning while lying in bed, but the thought of hitting that cold floor and waiting for that first cup of hot coffee makes me linger a lot longer than I should! Milo, too. My dogs love to burrow under the blankets. They only peek out when they know I'm ready to get up and then they loyally follow.
I think my fear of color came well before the trend of simplifying and toning everything down. How and why, I don't know. Years and years ago I remember walking down the aisles of furniture showrooms when The Husband and I were selecting furniture for our living room, den and family room. And then the lakehouse. That's a lot of furniture shopping...not all at once mind you. I chose what I liked. Pretty green florals, red and blue plaid, checks, stripes! I loved it all and I created beautiful rooms (if I can say so myself) around my furniture choices. Where did that open minded, adventurous, intuitive sense of style go? Did I succumb to the masses? Did I just crawl under a rock waiting for inspiration to strike?
I was reading a blog today, I wish I could give her credit but it slips my mind. She wrote that she got brave in her family room and bought black and white plaid curtains for her mostly neutral family room. It was a big leap and of course she was nervous, it's not something you can afford to make a mistake with, literally, with the cost of curtains. But she made the right move and they make such a great impact, they really "make" the room. So maybe I'm not the only one that's leery about jumping in without testing the waters.
So how do you weigh in on this? What is your decorating mantra when making choices? Do you have a vision? Do you go with your favorite colors or patterns, or do you choose what strikes your fancy? Do you have any suggestions for what I should do with this Plain Jane room? (!!!!). Please, please, let's talk.
In a nutshell (or large skillet):
Melt 3 T of butter and saute 3 finely chopped garlic cloves over low heat approximately 3 minutes until golden. Add 1 pound of cleaned, peeled shrimp, tails on if you prefer, and toss around until coated with butter and cook on medium until opaque, about three minutes. Do not overcook or they will be tough. Squeeze the juice of a half of a lemon over shrimp. Add 1/2 cup of fine bread crumbs and toss gently until coated. Add a pinch of salt, remove from heat and keep warm.
I made a simple pasta to go with the shrimp and you can be boiling the water and cooking the pasta, which was fettuccine, while you are making the shrimp. Once the pasta was drained, I returned it to the hot pot and added 1 chopped tomato, a sprinkle of dried basil and salt and pepper to taste, and then added enough olive oil to make it nice and slippery. Easy. Delicious. And maybe 20 minutes from start to finish. Go for it!
I think I ended on a happy note after all of my complaining about my self doubt when it comes to decorating. But that's why we are here for each other, right? I've always prided myself on having my own style, but sometimes we get a little lost, maybe a little scared of commitments because it does involve an investment of time and money that we have to live with. Are we all so sure of ourselves?
Let me have your thoughts. And have a great weekend. I'm getting those wellies out!!
XO,
Jane

You have a very lovely home. Enjoyed the pictures.
Hi Jane,
Just getting caught up here. I read both your recent posts and of course they are very fun and interesting!
I saw that black and white check curtain room, and your right, it's just gorgeous!
I love your family room, but I know just what your talking about. I am in the decorating doldrums too right now. I tend to love color, the more the better! But I also enjoy the neutrals. I just say go with what you love! And don't worry about the trends too much. Hey, that is a great looking recipe there. Finally today, a lot warmer here. But of course it snowed some too. Sigh. Such are winters around our neck of the woods. I am heading to Phoenix at the end of the month. My Mom is coming too, so it should be an interesting trip. Short though, just Tuesday through Saturday. So let me know if you come up with some great mantle ideas, I am really stuck with that right now.
Hugs friend,
Cindy
You know me. My house is filled with reds, yellows, greens and blues. I love color and love mixing and matching patterns, wood tones, painted and non painted pieces. I am a firm believer in love at first sight, when I see something I love, I just know it will fit in with what I have. I don't worry about current trends, just go with my gut instincts.
The blogger you were talking about with the black and white curtains was featured on Savvy Souther Style blog, and her blog is called, The Endearing Home. Here is a link:

First off I have to say your doggies are adorable! I wish I could lay around under my blankie all day too!
On to the next subject...Are you on Pinterest? I would recommend you start pinning pictures of rooms that you really love and then you can start noticing if some of the same colors or styles keep popping up. That way when you do decide to add some type of color or texture to a room it won't feel so risky because you have done your research first. :)
Love the new furniture that is on the way!
Lovin' the pics of the pups Jane and dinner looks good! Mild but rainy here too, right now I'm just glad it's not ice-again. I'm not the one to help with decorating advice but I know you'll get it all worked out:@)
Love the corner tv cabinet - I am looking for something similar for my great room. Your room is going to look so pretty. You have a great neutral background for adding color - I think curtains or pillows are a great way to start :-)
Janie, to answer your questions. I have never been afraid of color, and I only follow trends I like. Basically , I do what makes me happy.
That being said, I love and adore the decorating style of Jackye Lanham. I think I spelled her name correctly. She uses neutrals masterfully, but she has a lot of texture in her room designs. I study h rooms in amazement. Check out her design website. She is from Atlanta.
What about a subtle tone on tone plaid throw in neutrals? Pop some pillows around or leather books. That is the fastest and most economical way to add punch to a room. Just change your pillow covers. Or bring in textured frames or a textured ottoman, etc. Home Goods has frames... Oh, and neat boxes. I love, love, love boxes.
I have a neutral sitting room in our home, and I adore it. I have changed vey little in twenty years, and it still looks current. Oh, I have changed out the pillows, and I also got a bigger sofa because the old one looks so tattered and was too small. But the room is painted a mocha that I love as much as I did when I first had it painted. I have kept the pillows in the black and white and neutral mode. I do have blue and white porcelain in there which I have always loved. That and white orchids. .
Target had some cool pillows for about $25 that looked like the African kuba cloth (sp). I love them. They would look great with your throws and your neutrals. They are in the Nate Berkus collection, and that has frames that are nifty, too, in faux tortoise.

First of all, I don't think any of us should make any decisions this month, just saying, hah.
My suggestion is to add color with pillows and subtle accessories....like a vase or picture. I have the same issue. I love color but a little afraid of it at the same time. I love the all white but need somewhere for my eyes to focus....such as color.
We have rain and dark skies today. Depressing.
SO glad you are our of the tundra for the time being.
Good luck and I hope you get a lot of ideas.
((((HUGS))))
I usually have the opposite problem Jane. I have been guilty of always going with color and pattern and it makes it hard to change the look without changing everything. I am learning to use more neutrals and add the color in accessories, because I like to change my look with the seasons and on a whim. You have a wonderful base in all the beige, add some pretty pillows, cheap and easy to change when you get tired of them. I have also found that black and white adds a lot of pattern and interest but also allows an added pop of another bright color without competing. Really, some fresh, bright flowers and a few pretty pillows would bring your room to life!
OMG Jane I just love those pics of your pups...so cute!!
I love color especially red and greens and I also like having different pieces in a room so it's not so matchy matchy. I say go with what you love...if you choose a neutral sofa you could easily add colorful pillows that could always be changed out from time to time to give you a different look.
That shrimp looks so YUMMY!!
Well, my curtains are BLACK... I add red ALL around and some bright pillows of different colors which I can change out when the mood strikes! I love you tables and the tv cabinet:) Yummy to the recipe! I will be having that and smacking my lips:) Have a blessed and dry weekend, HUGS!
Your living looks lovely to me. I think we are all influenced by popular blogs, and if they say something is wrong, like color, well then who are to not follow their advice? Just go with what catches your eye. I hope it doesn't involve burlap or mason jars. Lol. xo

I posted my neutral decor with no colour- but with mercury and frost and winteresque touches in my latest post.
You have a great home and awesome "bones and backdrop." Fear not.
And remember the mantra to always have a little black somewhere.
Hope I have helped, at least please know you aren't alone. I loathe colour except for green and black and brown and sometimes a teensy bit of red or burnt orange, but pretty much no colour.
Thanks for the scampy recipe, yum!
I have always kept my walls a soft oyster or white color, my paintings ( many of which are big and bright) and throw pillows, or even throws are where I add color, My furniture is again in white s and beige, I can change the look just by changing my art, pillows and throws, flower arrangements, winter I have red plaid throws, darker colors, summer more pastels, i find I get TOO much information from Reading blogs, it confuses me into not knowing what I want, Pinterest is another place that muddles my mind, I have to take some time away and really think what I want and like, trying to n ot be influenced too much by too many choices, that said, Pinterest and blogs give us ideas, we just need to know when to rein it back to our own, your home is so beautiful, I love your style
Hi Jane! I don't know what decorating advice to give you except for maybe just go with your heart. I know that sounds cheesy, but just get what you like, but be mindful of things that are too trendy. I know I can't afford to get all new things when trends change, so I mostly go with traditional style furnishings. I personally like to keep it a bit neutral so it's easy to add in pops of color for different holidays, etc. I'm probably not much help. :) Love the pics of the dogs!
I think your home is lovely Jane. A few splashes of color here and there certainly couldn't hurt.
The recipe sounds delicious!
Enjoyed the photos of the dogs. If you haven't stopped by my blog yet, do so, my last post has a shrimp recipe on it as well!
I just had my LR redone and the main thing that we did was choose pops of color that really brightened up the room. Check out the blog for pics.
Jane, you have style to spare! It sounds like what you need is your old style-self-confidence. Go ahead and add some colour - cushions, throws, baskets and books aren't costly and could have big impact.
I love colour and could never embrace the 'all white' trend. I like to look at it or visit it, but couldn't live with it.
Afternoon Jane, love the fur babies, so cute.......Well, I like my reds, blues and mustards, usually primitive is dark but need color. Add some color, play around with different pillows and such, you might surprise yourself, Francine.
You and I are so on the same wavelength re cooking. Tonight I am making shrimp scampi; earlier today I made a pasta salad (bowties, green pepper, carrots, red onion, and tomato with Italian salad dressing). Interestingly enough I forgot to add the basil and parsley and I thank you for reminding me! Love the photos of your dog s peeking out from under the covers!
Love those little pup's pictures. So cute with their little noses peeking out. You can tell that they are loved.
So many bloggers have had homes that are done in pale neutral colors.I have noticed a trend happening....they are getting tired of the pale colors and are adding a pop of color here and there. Turquoise is a favorite for many. Shop your house for some colorful things and experiment. It will be a subject for many posts ...as you try different things.

You have such a beautiful home, Jane! I love all the neutrals. It gives a home a calm, serene feeling. But bringing in a bit of color does add "life" and movement and is so easily done. First, choose three colors that you really love. Usually they'll work together just perfectly. Then use those colors in throw pillows, maybe a large picture on your mantel, fresh flowers on your coffee table, and a snuggly throw tossed over the sofa. When you get tired of those colors, you can easily switch out those elements you brought in for new ones! It's all part of the fun of "playing house" and creating a warm, welcoming, and cozy atmosphere. :) Have fun with it, sweetie! I know that you'll come up with something really pretty!

I do not follow trends....so I say put some color in it....that new aqua, or maybe some yellow....If you just do a few touches, if you grow tired of it, it won't be painful to get rid of it.
The fun thing about starting anew with a neutral room is that you can use whatever accent colors you want! What are your favorite colors? Go through your closet and see what colors stand out - what colors you wear the most of. Those are the colors you might want to try using in your living room. Or, go through Pinterest boards of living and family rooms and pin which ones most appeal to you. Then, take a look at them collectively and it should give you a sense of your style and color scheme. Another idea...I do this a lot, as you know...simply play around with things! Shop around your house from other rooms or if you have household decor items in storage (basement?), start grabbing things that you think would look nice in your living room. There's nothing to be afraid of - you don't like the way something looks, take it down, put it back, try something else. I bet whatever you end up doing will look fantastic - can't wait to see the finished room!
Throw caution to the wind and explode with some color! Cushions, vases, books whatever makes you feel good!!
I love your style!
Your Milo reminds me of my Lucy!
I'm totally drooling over your shrimp dinner, Jane! I could eat shrimp every day! I love the photos of your pups, too darn cute! How about adding some pops of color with a few new pillows and a cozy throw? Maybe some big and chunky pillar candles in colors that you like, added to your mantle. And a nice bouquet of fresh flowers, as a treat for yourself! Easy peasy!!
I buy things that I love ... and then I make them work in my house.
Fondly,
Glenda
I seldom "plan" how a room will look. I buy things that appeal to me, then just use them. I find that I subconsciously choose items that work together, without thinking much about it. I would definitely add some color. Maybe patterned curtains, or plaid? I am loving turquoise colors right now and have added lots of that color to my decor. That color would also look great with your neutrals. Just trust your judgement and it will be great!!
If it were solely up to me we would have stronger and brighter colors in our home, but some of those choices make my husband uncomfortable. He, on the other hand, might still be fine with furniture selection and placement from 30 years ago but he compromises on that score as I do on color choices. I plan to write about our quest for a new TV cabinet/entertainment center soon.
Love seeing the pups so comfy under blankets. They have the right idea!
You didn't miss blog entries of mine, I quit for a while but wrote about craft projects on anther blog that I used with Pinterest. I'm back to just this one and imported the craft posts.
Stay warm, safe and dry!
I can so relate to your fear of color! I painted a room a blue years ago that looked gray and felt depressing to me. I know gray is the "in" color now and I like it in chalk paint on furniture and gray clothing like a cashmere sweater with silver jewelry, but not so much on walls. I do like soft neutrals on walls -creamy colors- I find them calming and easy to live with. My house does look so dreary after the holidays - and this part of the winter is soooo long. I can see color added in apple green in throw pillows, touches of red or orange or yellow. Some new, large plants to brighten up dark colors helps after the trees is taken down. I really like the handpainted lampshades or ones covered in patterned fabric. Textures in baskets and a colorful rug or lamp. These changes are easy to make and not permanent. I really do love color, but not so much on walls - I get tired of it!

Hi Jane, I hear you about the weather around here. I went out today in a hoodie as well. Now we have to worry about the flooding. I must be having the same decorating dilemma as well. The week after Christmas I painted my Kitchen (it's a small kitchen), picked up new window blinds and picked up some paint for our living room. It used to be a sunny buttercup yellow. Now, it's cream! Which I liked at first but now that it's on the wall it looks peachy and I'm not sure I like it, because it looks like a dated color now, and even my son said our living room looks like a 1980's house now. (not sure how he would know since he was born in the 90's)! However, when trying to decide what to do for pops of color I decided to think about what I love in nature. The colors I'm drawn to in my garden or other gardens. I agree with you, too much time looking at Pinterest and designer blogs for ideas makes you second guess your own decisions. I'm also going to use an old trick I heard about on an HGTV show, not sure which one but they said to go through magazines really quickly and only pay attention to the ones that make you stop and "oohh" & "aaahh" at them.
Good luck but your home is very pretty already so I'm sure whatever colors you choose will be fabulous.

Hi Jane ~ I'm slow getting around to visit..Had my 13 year old grandson over night and for the day. We did a lot of stuff together and I devoted that time to him as he goes back to school Monday.
Our Molly does that too...loves to get under the covers on the bed or the pillows on the couch. I have so many pictures of her it's ridiculous. HaHa.
Always love the look of your home and new furniture..Just lovely.
I think you should find something you love whether it's a cushion or a piece of art then pull your accent colour from that. You don't want to just get something for the sake of getting it ~ you will get tired of it quickly. Love your new furniture pieces!
I want a new couch for the living room so I can actually make that my jump off point. The room is long and narrow and I have a fireplace on one side and a doorway on the other to contend with ~ so hard to do anything with!
We too have had bitter cold temps but this weekend has been so warm ~ except for the freezing rain yesterday of course!! We are never happy about the weather are we. xo
I may not be a good one to say...my house is full of the color red! I have kept a few pictures (have to limit myself) that I love...a room decorated in colors and pieces I really like, and two of vignettes that I really like. I keep those in my purse for inspiration as I am out thrifting, etc. Ultimately, if you are drawn to it, adding things you really like along the way ... it will work! Can't wait to see what you do!!!
Blessings,
Cindy
Your new furniture looks nice --will look forward to seeing it in place. It's neutral enough that you can still add color when and where you feel like it. Even a bouquet of flowers can add color. Glad you are getting some warmer temperatures. Here too.
Jane I wore my wellies all week here in Southern IL. We had a slow but sure warm up. Last night it was all froze again and the puddles were all slick. This morning after church I almost bit the dust walking into a store...it just looked like a wet spot! Stay dry and show us your brave new color moves! I have a lot of color and I often wish it were neutral...but not with boys!
Sherry
Hello Jane,
I'm just catching up on favorite blogs myself. Sorry about your back. I've been having some health stuff myself this season. Hoping you are really on the mend. I loved your comment about the mimosas. Go Girl! As for the neutral color scheme-I get it. I have cream carpets and ivory leather couches and-the color pops are all in the accents. Pillows, throws, ceramic pieces add the color. I love neutral foundations-so easy to change it up seasonally. Happy New Year to you (I do remember that snow in my 2 years in Michigan). Stay warm!!
xx, Heather
I can't believe how adorable your pups are. I would never get out of bed if they were with me.
I don't have just one approach to decorating. Sometimes I have a plan, sometimes I don't. Fads are bad, trends are better, and our gut is best. You will figure it out, and you'll do a great job while you're at it.
First of all I love your photos of the pups..just beautiful.
Color: in the late summer I was drooling over blogs and magazine picture that had color on the walls / usually some shade of green. I do have a grayish-green accent wall in my dining room but it is big and square. As much as I like and would like to have colored walls or even an accent wall in the living room it is long and narrow and it would not work..color would close it in further. Then there was a Jacobean fabric that I liked alot and I debated about that for curtains but since I am in that room every day I thought it would get old quickly. So I made some envelope closures for my pillow forms with that and then I made some more in brighter colors...did a table runner, things like that. Well then there was fall decor and then Xmas so I've had plenty of color but for the moment now that that is put away, having a throw quilt or two, various pillow patterns and colors, and things like that is working. Well, it is what I had to settle for with a long narrow living room :)
I love the furniture! That corner cabinet is perfect! I usually have a vision & the majority of the time the vision doesn't come to pass. sigh.
I am sure whatever you do will work out, Janie. I love your new furniture, good start. The dogs are so cute!...Christine
Hi Jane!
Your doggies are so cute...they remind me of one of ours..our Belle is always cold and cuddled up in a blanket in our house somewhere! Well I'm with you when it comes to decor..I used to have colorful rooms and then everyone here in my neck of the woods and even most furniture stores starting only stocking leather and suede, twill upholstered pieces all in brown, tan or beige. I too feel like I need more color in my life so I'm going back to my favorite things..country french patterns...yellows, reds and blues...who said we need to have cookie cutter decors...our homes should reflect us right? Your room is gorgeous and if you pick out patterns and colors for pillows, rugs and curtains that you love then you will have a that new pretty room you want. Can't wait to see what you do...I'll be brave if you will! BTW love the pieces you picked out...the corner cabinet is really a nice piece for a TV!
Miss Bloomers
I am definitely a color person. I tried the all white in a small room, which I loved, but gradually some bits of color are creeping in. Your living room is lovely with your new furniture. Pillows are an easy way to add some color without spending a lot of money. Adding color through accessories on your mantel display is another way. I never seem to have a plan...I just go with what I love and usually it works.
Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your very lovely comments,
Mary Alice
Hi Janie! Oh, I love me some color. Your living room is so pretty!
Thanks for popping in to see me.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia :)
Your pups are so cute, Jane! I think we all go through that "blah" feeling right after the holidays. It's hard to tone down the colors and decide on what "flavor" you want in your home after all the brilliance and color of Christmas. I don't do a lot of Valentine decorating but enough to justify having some bright pinks and reds in simple and subtle ways around our home -- kind of a transition from December through February. I personally love the "pop-of-color" concept, because it can be done inexpensively with pillows, vases & bowls, and with candles. I even sometimes like "trendy" but never in something big -- small trendy works for me!
OMGoodness! You win the award for the cutest cozy sofa pups!
Your new tables and TV console are beautiful, I can't wait to see them in place!
Once the tables arrive, I would focus on the fireplace. (Your fireplace and Ms Gina Random's are my faves in blogland!)
I see something dramatic above the fireplace. A statement painting, a mirror with an amazing frame...Something big and rectangle to draw the eye.
Lanterns with flameless candles on "timers", or "remotes" would be lovely atop your mantle...I also love your pretty blue pitcher on the mantle.
Books add color...arrange some of your favorites on your new tables.
You are a book lover...this feature would be soooo Jane!
Do you have a favorite book about gardens?
Hooked on Houses just featured a cottage guest house in Carmel. The living room is definitely beige...and there is floral.
It's a nice mix of trends that we have transitioned through with some new touches. It sort of made me think of you when I first saw it! I like the dark lamps as accents.
I know your sweet Emily will help
you pull it all together. She is so very talented!

I think the new pieces of furniture you're getting will look great! I always have a vision of what I want my room to look like then I jot down the items, colors etc that I need to make it happen. I'm not fussy about high end stuff as long as it doesn't look cheap. That's my motto. I'm sure your room will come together just fine. There is so much inspiration out there these days.
Just catching up with everything! I'm with Cindy....I think you should stay with what you love! Your home is beautiful and shows your heart!
Happy day to you!
karianne
the pups are adorable, and look warm:) maybe take baby steps and add a favorite color with pillows, an area rug, or something above the mantle. then, if you love it, take another baby step, add a throw or new curtains--just buy what you love! i love the new furniture, jane:)
Hi Jane!
I love colour and since I started blogging hopped on the all the white look. But I am once again being drawn to colour and patterns. My latest craze is gorgeous drapes with pattern. I am so drawn to the homes that have these drapes when i walk by. I just love the impact they make. Cabbage roses, toile and birds I say bring it on!
Happy New Year
Been away from blogging so long

My whole house is filled with color. I have orange and pink in my bedroom, greens and blues in the living room and red, red red in the kitchen and spare room is pink and red....beige is not in my personality, but when I see a room with whites, creams and browns...it does make me swoon, but it will never happen in my home.
Hi Jane, I was here earlier, but I couldn't leave a comment. My computer has been messed up all day!!
I say...just buy some curtains that you like, hang them on the windows, sit down, and look at them for a day or two. If you like the way they look...great. If not...take them back to the store. That's the only way you will know. You have such great taste, I cannot imagine your house not looking perfect...whatever you choose to do, it will look wonderful!!!
Kisses coming your way!

I had to come check out the new furniture...love it! I forgot to mention on the last post that I have my grandparent's cherry bedroom furniture! I think it will make the move to Florida when it happens. It is really outdated, but such good quality and memories that I think it will be just fine in a guest room...even if it doesn't "look like the south"!
