A WEEKEND IN MAY

We finally made it up to the lake after being stuck at home with a zillion weekend obligations. We had gloomy weather on Saturday and I sat in the Summerhouse most of the time eating peanuts and surveying the lake with my binoculars. I can be industrious like that. But Sunday was warm and sunny and we (The Husband) cleaned up the patio and we had just the best day. This is a picture looking out at the bay from my seat on the patio. Our trees have become monsters but we really enjoy the shade in the dead of summer.
I'm taking you on a little tour inside before we go back out. This is the upstairs bath. If you remember when we were renovating, we decided The husband would remodel this bathroom, Emily had the powder room downstairs and the laundry room and I did the kitchen. So this is the bath that The Husband did. It was completely gutted to make room for a free standing tub by removing the linen closet...I'm not good with materials but he used some type of stone and trim for the walls and the floor is Travertine.
I think the whole thing turned out very European looking and so The Husband shopped the house for vases and flowers and candles and it turned out very nice. We aren't crazy about the wall color so he is going to paint it a cream color on the next rainy day. (I thought I staged things pretty nicely but I left my contact lens stuff out). I think he did a pretty good job. The bathtub is a lot of fun to play in.
This is a corner of the Great room that I am working on. Problem number one is that we have a Victorian settee and then two country style glider rockers. We are really comfortable sitting here and looking out at the bay, and I know the furniture styles clash, but it's going to be awhile until we change it. I am going to paint the end table but my problem is the table in the center that I picked up for pennies at a fleatique shop. It looks Early American or Colonial. It fits the spot perfectly though...to set a drink or a book down, but I want to paint it. Should I keep it? Should I paint it white, blue, green, black? The weather is getting warm so I can start painting things I've been collecting all winter long and this is first on my list. I also measured the rug wrong and so I am looking for a round one to fit the space better. Nice round rugs are difficult to come by...everything is braided and I don't want that.
This picture was taken off the balcony of our master bedroom. Here you can see a small portion of the lake. Did I tell you this lake is huge? It has an island that I will take you on a tour of this summer. We live on the far west corner of the lake. It was only about 70 degrees out there and there were already some crazy boaters. Brrrr...
Can you spot the little dove nesting on one of the beams on the balcony. The copper top must have blown off during the winter and this little guy found the perfect place to make a nest. I am going to have to wait awhile to put my furniture out. He did allow for a few pictures.
This is on the covered patio, a nest of baby robins. We are gone a few weeks and all the birds moved in. There is an old saying that birds that build a nest attached to your house mean that there is love inside. I agree. ;-D
This little guy looks mean. I tried to get a picture of the mom and dad feeding them but they would fly away. There are four in the nest and thankfully none have fallen out. I have nursed many a bird in my lifetime and I swore I would never do it again.
We had an early supper of grilled chicken sandwiches with potatoes cooked with onions on the grill. Afterward, we sat on the patio and had a drink. I of course could not choose between wine or Pepsi. The summerhouse is in the background.
This is a view of my English garden. The boxwood needs a good crew cut. A lot of plants are coming up but not blooming. I also have some plants that I bought last fall on sale that made it through the winter that I have to plant. I love how the sun sets over the trees. That is our shed there, it matches the house and the Summerhouse so it looks like one big compound!
We had to leave Sunday night as The Husband has client meetings early in the morning {usually we stay until Monday morning} so that accounts for the grim look on Milo's face.

Before I go, I want to pass this recipe down to all of you. It is from the lake newspaper. It will be perfect for your Memorial Day cookout. Let me know if you try it.

Margarita Dip

Mix 1 8 oz. pkg of cream cheese, 1/3 cup thawed margarita mix, 2 T orange juice and 1/4 cup powdered sugar in a blender or with a mixer until smooth. Fold in 1/4 whipped cream and chill for 1 hour. Serve with fruit or pour over angel or pound cake for a dessert. Yum!!!

Have a great week! :-)

Hi..I love the bathroom! The tub is wonderful! I think I would paint the little table white along with the end table....I have a country glider too and I am thinking of painting it white and doing a pretty floral slipcover on the cushions. I love what you said about birds building nests attached to your house...I had never heard that before.~ Have a wonderful day!~Patti

Hi Janie! WOW, what a great tub you have. Oh so perfect for a long soak w/some scented candles and a soothing cd playing.... As for your lake house, it must be so relaxing just to hang out and look out onto the water. I say paint all your tables white and rough up the edges to give them a worn & distressed look. hugs, Sue

Janie, I think the hubs did an awesome job with that bath! It looks GREAT! I love the soft green color, too. I think it's very soothing and pretty. Cream would be nice, too, though. :-)

Regarding the table, I just read something in one of the design mags that talked about having lots of legs in a room. Maybe if you slipcover the loveseat (and keep it) that would make the discrepancy in style between the sofa and the chairs less noticeable as well as making the cute little table stand out less. What do you think?

You could do one of those dropcloth slipcovers that I keep seeing. Get one of the great big dropcloths so you have lots of fabric, and it only costs about $10 at Home Depot. You might need two, and you need to make sure they match. Anyhow, you pin the thing inside out and make extra give for around the seat area. I've watched slipcover ladies do it. And if it's loose, hey, it's shabby chic! ;-) OR, you could get one from somewhere like Sure Fit Slipcovers. I just think it might be fun to try and make one, and you'd only be out about $20 if you didn't like it. Then you could use those for painting or for more craft projects. :-)

I'm sitting here sore as all get out. I fell on concrete and brick on Thursday and nearly killed myself. I'm going to go back to bed soon because sitting at the computer hurts.

Wanted to drop in and say, "Hi," when this rolled on my reader. I have a little doll I introduced along with her maker. I hope you will go visit Patricia because she is so sweet. She is French, but she lives in England. I think you'd enjoy her blog and her videos and dolls!

Love to you and Milo...

XO,

Sheila :-)

What a beautiful bath... I love that tub. I think your living room corner looks nice. Who says everything has to match? What is important is if you like it. I think the table would look nice in blue... or even as is. I am easy to please. I loved seeing the nesting birds.

Jane, I just love it when you post about the lake. I am impressed with hubby's decorating abilities! For some reason, I must say, I find the lake house evokes more of your personality than what I have seen in your own home, prior to redecorating there. I hope you get to infuse your home with some of the same relaxing, easy, breezy decor as your lake house has.

I love it!

Your bathroom is so pretty. Love the tub!

I think I would paint the table maybe in that blue/gray shade of paint. And a lovely colorful rectangle rug would look great. Maybe one from Overstock.com or Pottery Barn with the big, bold flowers.

Jane, it appears as though you had a very relaxing weekend ~ I'm glad! The tub is fabulous although I'm a shower girl. I know you enjoy it. Thanks for sharing all the pics...beautiful area and your home is so nice! For me, I'd paint both tables black ~ need a touch of black in every room. :-) You could also upholster the sofa and chairs and create a different look altogether. I know nothing about upholstering but so many in blog land do.

Thanks for the recipe too!

Lucky you to have a lake house. How neat that would be? Love the two glide rockers, but agree that you could change them up by using slipcovers on them - sort of like a skirt to hide the gliding portion. I am not a big fan of painting, but LOVE painted items. I will cover anything in fabric and it makes for easy cleaning. Have a great week.

Hi Janie...Thanks for stopping by and for becoming a follower! I just wanted to tell you that I really never went to garage sales myself, but when I moved to this small town 3 years ago, I decided to stop by a few and see what I could find. I do not use newspapers to find the sales. I just go out on Fridays and Saturdays and I drive right by the ones that have lots of clothing and I also go the sales in the more affluent neighborhoods. I just wanted to let you know what I do to find some good stuff! Have a great evening!~Hugs, Patti

What a lovely bathroom - that tub is gorgeous! I'd say that your husband did a good job.
re the furniture: I hope you'll resist the urge to clear it all out and get new stuff. Surely part of the charm of a summer house is in the accumulation of treasured items - some people would go to great lengths to find the bits and pieces for that look. I think that painting the table is a good idea - and perhaps another piece or two...but keep the quirky settee and the comfy rockers. They keep the room real.

I so wish we had a weekend retreat. The Hubster's parents have some property they'll never use (it was part of a farm that his mother inherited when her parents passed on) and we hope to someday build a little cottage or cabin there. It's far enough away to be a nice getaway but not so far as to be too time consuming to travel to and from. Just about right. :)

Lovely bathroom redo, Jane! So pretty. I definitely think you should paint that little coffee table. It will be so cute with a pop of color. Not sure what else you are doing in there, so one of the colors you are using would be great.

Knitty said...

Your bathroom is gorgeous! As for the corner of the great room, it looks so cozy there, I don't think the styles clash at all. It is very inviting and that trumps having it all match IMO. As for color, any would work but I like the softness of a weathered green or gray-blue. I think white or black would be too stark for me.

We'll all be looking forward to seeing what you decide. You have such good taste, anything you pick is going to be a winner!

Okay...couldn't decide between the wine and the Pepsi? Let me help you with that decision. I'll take the wine you can have the pop.
Glad you are looking for a new rug. That one is too small but I also think the table is too small for the space. A bigger square, one would have room for some books, drinks (my wine, your pop)maybe a checkerboard or a big vase of flowers.
Kudos to the husband on that bathroom reno. Wow.

There is a chance my husband will be stuck in Taiwan longer and I may be here. I'll send you an email as soon as I know. Still have that Disney thing on my mind, though. I SO want to run away to fantasy land, don't I? :-)

Oh that tub is FABULOUS! Now if I could find a guy to decorate like that, I just might consider getting married again, lol.

Your lake house looks so beautiful and relaxing. I can't help you with the paint, but I think I can help with the rug. I just became an affiliate of CSN Stores and while I haven't set up my link or anything yet, I was browsing around again (you know they've been sponsoring all those blog giveaways). They have an A+ rating with BBB and most everything is free shipping. I just received a package from them yesterday from Applestone Cottage's giveaway and was pleased as punch.

Anyway, go to www.CSNrugs.com and put round rugs in the search box. They have a lot to choose from (like 6000), even if the photo doesn't show a round one, if you click on it, it will take you to a page with the different shapes and sizes. (I'm looking for one for my kitchen.)

Until the 25th you can save 25% on any rug over $100 by putting SPRINGRUG25 in the box at checkout.

Hope this helps! If you find something, let me know. I'm going to be setting up with them in the next few weeks and would love to hear your feedback. I know I love my new dishes! You can see them in today's post.

Have fun and I hope it warms up for you soon!

Hello Jane,
We made it safely to Fla. Mom and Dad leave tomorrow, so I will be checking in more frequently on the blogs. I found a place in the condo where I can get internet, yippee!!! Hope things are well with you.

Beautiful saying about birds and nests. Love it!
I'd paint the little table, just choose a color and make coordinates. It will be stunning! Your patio and bathroom look gorgeous too.

Jane, Wine or Pepsi sounds like a country song - LOL. I love the pics and sentiment about the birds, we get a lot of feather friends around here. The house is beautiful, you guys did a great job and I'm so happy for you that you can now relax & enjoy. Thanks for the recipe...I'm going to try it out for BIL's BDay!

Jane, you have got the most beautiful place! I just love those chairs-don't change them! I would love to sit there and watch the world go by!

Hope your weekend has been wonderful.

Best wishes,
Natasha.

" I can be industrious like that" LOL Me, too!

♥ the new tub in your bathroom...very European! I grew up with a deep one like that & there is nothing better for a good long hot soak.

I agree with Sue & others, I think the tables would look great in distressed creamy white. I wouldn't worry about the different eras of furniture so much. Its eclectic!

Your *compound* at the lake is just heavenly! I am very envious. :D Enjoy it & the special times with your hubby.

The whole place looks like the perfect spot for relaxation (even the birds think so). That's exactly what I need right about now.

Hope you come by for a visit and see my lovely cottage flowers...just one of the things that keeps me so busy. ;)

Happy Sunday!

It sounds like a wonderful time at the lake. I love your bathroom and want to thank you again for the lead on the tub. The one I got is a little different, and I love it to pieces!
