TREASURES IN THE GARDEN AND RE~VAMPING A VANITY BENCH

Okay, I had these three plate rack thingies that I ordered from One Kings Lane months ago.  My daughter asked me why on earth I would order something that went with nothing in my home.  I was asking that question myself when they arrived in brilliant yellow, red and blue.  That's the yellow one above.  Just about the only time I use primary colors in my home is at Christmas, those glorious reds and greens.  I know I simply fell in love with the design and shape and I never...NEVER thought to spray paint them, my mind just never went in that direction until recently.  And I know this is hard to believe, but I hadn't even taken them out of the box because I was so dejected that I had ordered them in the first place.  So, out to the patio we went yesterday.
I chose the middle color here, Silver Screen.  I'm a little nervous, I consider gray a "cool" color and the furniture is definitely warm.  The color we have now is like a beige/tan.  But I want to stop worrying about things like this, and other insane hang ups... like not wearing white after labor day, redheads not wearing red, and only blue eyed Swedish women being true blondes.  I am on the hunt for a new comforter or duvet cover and an area rug.  I found a duvet at Land Of Nod that I really like (did you know it's not just for kids anymore?).  I will post an image of it next week.  The hard part is the area rug...it stays forever, like carpeting, it has to coordinate with whatever kind of bedding I switch to over the years. A nice neutral sisal rug would make me more than satisfied, but The Husband likes to feel something soft under his feet.  I guess I can't fault him there.

So, I spent Tuesday taking everything but the large pieces of furniture out of the room.  The biggest job was emptying the bookshelves.  I never thought I would or could eliminate a book shelf, in fact, I always looked for the right place to add one.  But I've reached that time in my life that once I read a book, I can pass it on.  As much as I love it, there will never be time to reread it when there are millions and billions of books out there that haven't even been written that I want to read!  So I've been passing them on to my family and I also drop them off at a used bookstore nearby.  We have several shelves in our den and that's where I keep all my garden and decorating books, as well as classics and limited edition books I've found over the years.  I think I'm good with this, and these in the bedroom were finished and I decided I didn't even want shelves anymore.  I'll find a pretty piece of artwork or something.

Off to the lake tomorrow night.  I am definitely going to chill!  The Husband and I both need it.  Emily accused me of taking the last great white pumpkin so I have to scour Michigan to find one to give her and make her stop pouting!!  See Ya! :)

I am linking with Jody over at Rooted In Thyme for her Simple & Sweet Fridays party.  You have to check out the Woodland Garden birthday party her friends threw for her!  Rustic and so, so sweet! :)

XO,
Jane

Can't wait to see what you do to the bench, Jane! I'm sure you will find a great fabric to use on it.

I have plate racks just like that! Mine are black, old as the hills but I still love them and now on your cue I will change the color if I decide to change them! The vanity seat looks like a fun project, not to big, my kind of project.
Have a relaxing time at the lake house, hope you find the pumpkin!

I like your plate racks. I always forget that you can spray paint almost anything. Looks like you chose a great color for your bedroom. I'm in the process of re-doing our bedroom too. I just ordered a comforter set from Zulily. It was way cheaper than any I'd seen in the stores. Hope you find a white pumpkin for Emily! Have a relaxing weekend!

Jane,
You are so funny. I just love the way you tell it just like it is! My Mom was like that. She could write the most wonderful letters and I would always feel as though I was there with her. She had a wonderful way of expressing herself and so do you. She was way before the blogging era but I bet she could have written a great one.

Love finding those little vanity benches and I must say it's about time you got around to covering it! LOL!

Glad you are enjoying your fall and have fun and relax at the lake.

hugs
Sissie

Jane- oh-you have been bitten by the painting bug! Me, too. I am finally getting around to painting some projects I have had on the back burner forever. Love your plate racks, too.

Glad you are having a fun fall-even though it is a busy one. Have fun at the lake house- xo Diana

Your plate racks look great! I have several rooms that need painting but I just dread the thought of moving everything somewhere - I don't even know where I would put it! LOL

Have a great and restful weekend.

So proud of you for painting the plate racks!! I used one for a while in my master bath with towels rolled up in it hanging on the wall. It looked good. Can't wait to see your little stool all glammed up! You're on a roll! Have fun at the lake and get some R&R!!

Hi Jane, I like the color you are going to paint your bedroom. I will be anxious to see what you do with your vanity chair. I love the mums that we are seeing now. I keep thinking maybe I would like some, but don't have time to take care of them. I am waiting on my right eye surgery then I won't have to wear glasses. I do enjoy your visits. Have fun at the lake. It should be a pretty weekend. Hugs and Prayers from Your Missouri Friend.

Oh, I hate the mess of painting, but it's always so nice to have a room re-done. I like the color you chose for yours.
It looks like a fun day with your Emily. I do love a Farmer's market!
Have a nice weekend!

I like those plate racks and I had to laugh at your daughter's comment. I always think of paint as the ultimate transformer. There's pretty much nothing I won't try and paint hahaha Speaking of paint I like the color you selected. I'm thinking of painting one of my bedrooms a shade of gray. I'll have to see how you like your color on the walls.

I'm looking forward to seeing that bench redone. I think the grey will look beautiful in the bedroom. I am not usually a person who goes for neutrals, but lately I have been craving a little more neutral and I painted our bathroom grey. I absolutely love it!
Thanks for the idea of using pledge on the pumpkins, last year squirrels just ripped our pumpkins apart. I'll be trying the pledge to (hopefully) keep them away:>)

Agree with you on the salad plates, dinner ones seem to big and would hide the beautiful hanger. I can't wait to see how your stool will look! Don't worry about paint, it's just paint, you can always change it if you don't like it right? I too have been on a painting spree, boys room and going to the mudroom next! Hay, it never ends! Enjoy your weekend Jane!

I have a plate rack that I had on my kitchen wall for years, but finally got tired of it and it's now in the basement. Want it?! lol It's gold...but you can paint it. :-) Your vanity stool will be so cute once again, once you re-cover it. Can't wait to see your bedroom with the new color. I hate picking out large rugs for rooms - it's such a big decision and it takes me forever to find exactly what I want! I'm still looking for a big rug for under the kitchen table and chairs (we currently have sisal, and your husband is right, it doesn't feel good under the feet) and a round rug for my office. Have a great weekend at the lake!

Jane!
You have been so very busy inside and out! I must admit that I too have a plate hanger or two stashed in the garage! I love how you painted them!
You may have given me incentive to seek my forgotten holders!

I hope the Irish kick the Sooners! Our Cougs have a tall order with Stanford. A win would be pure joy!

My best to you and The Husband at the lake today!

The plate racks are great. I am sure you will find the perfect spot for them. I do the same thing, buy something then worry about where to put it. Like the frames from Joss and Main that are still in the box.

White pumpkins are the best! And have you seen the blue almost gray ones? They are also favorites.

The weather is gorgeous! so your weekend at the lake should be wonderful. I can't believe how many posts I've missed. Your hair looks so pretty, Jane. You sure do have a lot of thick locks.
I enjoyed reading your posts, and catching up on everything. Sorry about your booboo. Hope your finger is all healed by now.
The mirror, and plate racks turned out great! Can't wait to see where you hang all of them.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Jane I had pumpkins out last year and the squirrels never touched them...reason is they were too busy enjoying the cracked corn still on my cornstalks! :) Throw some corn or peanuts out for the squirrels and they'll turn their noses up at your pumpkins : )

I am going to make your FINGERNAIL CHICKEN today, ha ha ha :)

Looks like you have been really busy with all those great projects! Love the plate racks and that you painted them such a fun color! Can't wait to see what you do with the little bench...nice piece to have in any room. How great that you are having your bedroom painted. We had several rooms of our home painted last year ...boy it was nice for a change not to do it ourselves. I do hope you found a white pumpkin for Emily!

There seems to be a spate of repainting going on in blogland. Start one project, and next thing you know, it's cans of paint later.

Good for you to paint those babies, they look great.

I have that same bench. I always call it a piano bench. I have covered mine dozens of times over the years, sometimes with a sheet that I cut to fit! It is in my guestroom these days as a luggage holder.

I love the colors of the plate racks...good choices.

Sigh...Michigan...this is the time of year we usually make the trip up but since we did French Lick we aren't this year. I keep seeing pictures on my Facebook page and feeling the pull of the Tunnel of Trees!

I am skipping buying mums this year. I have lots of white ones planted in the yard (from the Fall wedding party 2 years ago). I bought some white pansies to go with the white and orange pumpkins and they should last thru November. I didn't realize your hair was so long and I love the new cut. Looks fabulous! xoxo

Those plate racks are adorable, and I like the new colors. You'll find a place for them -- maybe in your newly painted bedroom!

I forgot to comment on your hair in the last post. I didn't realize you had such long hair. It looks beautiful, and how wonderful that you can let it go curly -- so nice to have options!

Oh I can't wait to see your bedroom redone, Janie. I am sure it will be spectacular. I love those plate racks!...Christine
