RAINY DAYS & SUGAR COOKIES

I really don't like to bake, I don't have much patience for it and I don't like to measure things. Maybe I have been bored or a little cooped up lately, but I have had a craving to bake. The down side to this is that I have been on a diet...well I am always on a diet, but on this one I have sworn off all sweets and I have really been good {other than my Tootsie Roll binge on Halloween}. So truth be told I am baking and then giving it away. The Husband likes his sweets as well, but he is trying to shave a few inches off his waist so he has been substituting yogurt for his desserts. Ugh.
I spotted this very cool pan on the Sur La Table website and I just had to have it. Since I don't bake a lot, I am equally as bad at decorating cakes and cookies. A few sprinkles of colored candies and I am finished. This pan makes little acorns, squashes and pine cones...totally takes away all the confusion of baking something cute.
The pan is not recommended for making anything cake like. It came with a mix for Butter Pecan Bread which was perfect. Any type of quick bread would be great. This time I thought I would crank it up a notch and experiment with cookie dough. Pretty brave for someone as pathetic as me. I just rolled the dough into 3/4" balls and popped them in the pan. Easy as pie, er...cookies.
Aren't they darling? Everyone seemed to like them and I even have a boxful for Papa if I can nab him again. And if I keep up with the baking frenzy, I will have a nice stash in the freezer for the holidays.
I think they go well with a cup of tea. Have you tried the new Lady Grey tea? It sounds delicious and if she is related to Earl, I'm sure it is.

Not much else new in my world. It is getting colder and colder by the day and we rarely see the sun. Rain today. I'm hunting for a new pair of slippers, putting extra blankets on the beds and constantly reminding myself to order a load of firewood. We are supposed to have snow on Saturday...the first snow is always exciting and after that, the forecast is met with a groan. I'm ready to break into the Christmas funds soon, my problem lies in hiding the gifts. My daughters are like hunting dogs when it comes to presents. And then there is the yearly pleading prior to Christmas Day, "If you got the black boots that were on my list, can I please have them now to wear tonight." I have fallen for that many times. I am a complete pushover.

I hope everyone has had a good week and that you have fun plans for the weekend. And I hope we get a little snow to cover up the leaves I haven't raked up! Take care! :-)

That is so neat! I wish we had these kinds of brilliant things over here. Oh well, just another thing to add to my shopping list for when I hit your shores next year!

Any chance of sharing your cookie recipe by the way....please!!!! I love American sugar cookies but there are so many variations in the recipes. I would love to find one that I know is tried and true!

Best wishes and happy Friday,

I don't bake either but that pan is very tempting! If it's any consolation, even though it's meant to be late spring here I've had to turn the heating back on again as we're having a horrible cold and rainy snap. Probably good for baking though. Have a lovely weekend Jane :)

Jane what a wonderful idea! I love your little acorn sugar cookies, they are darling! There must be something in the air, because I baked today too, but I love to bake...I think it's the whole cold weather nesting thing!

And I drove my parents crazy each year at Christmas hunting for my gifts!!

Have a wonderful weekend!

I love how your cookies turned out...really CUTE! I'd gobble them down in a heartbeat!

It's been in the 50's today here in Georgia and I'm FREEZING! Winter hasn't even arrived yet, so I'm in big trouble! Oh, don't even mention all the fallen leaves...our yard looks like a disaster zone! Raking is not my cup of tea. Have a wonderful evening, Jane!

Hi, Janie!

Now those cookies are as cute as can be. I'm afraid I would have eaten ALL of them and not shared. LOL! I'm glad you ventured out and tried the cookie dough. Did you make it, or was it store bought? I tend to go the path of least resistance so store bought sounds tempting to me. ;-)

I can't believe it is going to snow there. We have some rain, but it is still summer here. Where has fall been hiding??? I am so far behind I don't know how I will ever catch up, but I am going to give it the old college try this weekend AFTER the garden club ladies come and case the house. I have to frantically clean tomorrow, and then I think I will be okay to coast for a few days in terms of housework. But there are other things calling my name LOUDLY. I just need sleep! Lots of it. I am sleep deprived. Not sure why, but you know how that is.

Stay warm and toasty and remember me when you are sitting in front of a cozy fire. I will be working that an indentured servant trying to buy his way clear! ;-)

XO,

Sheila :-)

I love the look of your sugar cookies. I love to cook, and I find that I have a desire to cook more during the cold weather months. I like to experiment more with recipes and try new things!! The cold weather drives me inside so I might as well be productive. You've done a fine job with your baking. I love your new toy that you used!! I think I will start decorating for Christmas this weekend!! We are expecting snow too. I have also begun Christmas shopping. I'm not a last minute person. I would like to know more about your sister, Leslie, that you have pictured on your sidebar. I don't know if you've ever done a post about her but it would be nice to hear her story. I've twice clicked on her photo to see if it takes me to a linked post & was disappointed that I couldn't learn more about her. I hope you will consider it someday, if its not too painful or upsetting to write about it. She's Beautiful!!!

Greetings! I enjoyed this post so much! First of all, that pan is just adorable and you are right: no decorating needed, they look perfect as they are. I am not much of a baker either. Here's an idea for you: get those "boxed" breads (blueberry, etc.) that they sell in the cake aisle. I am sure you just have to add an egg and water or something and it would be easy for you, plus look adorable coming out baked in that mold! Also: I laughed about buying gifts for your kids and you wind up giving them out before the holiday even arrives. I do this all the time too! I love my son so much, and I say to him, "see that box, it's for your birthday, but open it now! I want you to see it!" Crazy, I know, but I think YOU know what I mean! ;)
Take care and have a great weekend.
Best regards,

One of those posts you just want to stay and wallow around in because it is so much fun to look at. Lots of detail...That cookie tin is adorable...beautiful.
You are so accomplished at everything you do! Makes me smile!

I love that cookie tray! So sweet, and somehow, I'm sure the cookies taste even sweeter when shaped like that!

Love the pan from SurLaTable and the cookies look yum yum! I'm trying to watch my diet as well, but the temptations are too much for me. You asked about the ingredients for my Turkey Spice Rub...easy! 2 tsp. each of rosemary, thyme, and sage! Happy Autumn to you:)
