RANDOM RAMBLINGS

I have blogger's block. If you haven't noticed, it has been over a week since I have posted. It makes me worry about my creative side, if I have one. There has been absolutely nothing interesting going on in my life. Is it because it is January? Is anyone else feeling like life is a bit mundane lately? I took all of the Christmas decorations down yesterday (actually Emily did and I helped a little. She likes to earn money) and although I like the clean look and open space, I miss those darn lights! I loved to sit in front of the fire with the pretty ornaments reflecting the lights on the tree. But alas, Fir Elton John had seen better days and he is now at the curb waiting to go into the old chipper. But I have to admit, packing everything up seemed daunting and loomed over me every day as I put it off to the next. Now I have to find something else to worry and brood about.
So what have I been doing since my last post when I was snowed in at the Lakehouse? Well, Abby is home from school so I have had her and Emily in my hair and I have been forced to cook in the evening because suddenly they do not like or find take out food to be healthy. So now my Julia Child/Paula Deen method of cooking with tons of butter and wine is being deemed 'healthy'. To be honest, I don't want to lose my love of cooking. Come 4:00, I'd be out in the kitchen banging pots and pans and throwing ingredients together like a mad woman. It seems as we get older, our fervent love for some things turns into simple, once in awhile pleasures. I don't want that to happen with my cooking, or any of my domestic skills for that matter. I am an 'at home working girl' and proud of it.
Reading. I have turned into my favorite lady friend at Aunt Amelia's Attic and am reading 3 books at once; Shelter Me, Emily's Ghost and Chin up, Honey. The last book is written by a wonderful author who has a blog that I frequent, Curtiss Ann Matlock. She has written some great novels and they can be found on Amazon. I am enjoying every one of the books I am reading and sit for awhile every evening with one or the other.

Creatively, I am planning to start working on a floral arrangement under a cloche for The Husband's conference room at his office. I have been putting this off because of the holidays, but in actuality, it won't take that long. Maybe I am a little apprehensive. I get that way when I feel there might be some element of failure on my part. I can be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to projects...It has to be fear of failure. I have to get over it. The same goes with learning how to sew on that new machine of mine...I WILL learn to thread it! And I am going to start sewing! And I am going to use those 1000 yards of drop cloth that I have.

So that is pretty much all that is going on in Blondie's world. Outside my window is about 6 inches of frozen, dirty snow. Layla got stuck in it the other morning and I panicked. Out I ran in my pajamas and bare feet to save her. After I came in with what I was sure was frostbite of my feet, she ran off happily to play with Milo. So...I really haven't been going out much but I have been checking out all of the white sales online. I love the large selection you can get by going to Macy's or Kohl's or Target's websites and I have been getting some great deals. I have also been going to Pottery Barn's clearance section every couple of days (they sell out quick) and they have incredible deals. I just ordered some outdoor pillows, for $4.99 each. It doesn't get any better than that.

Finally, I want to tell you about my friend Beth from The Stories of A To Z. She is having a mantel party every Friday. It sounds like so much fun and I am hoping to glean some ideas because I really have a creative block when it comes to decorating my mantel. And I think it will be fun to change it around every week for the party. Beth has a great blog, visit her.

I hope you enjoyed the random pictures I took for lack of anything better to post and that everyone is having a good week. Are you cooking? Reading? Starting or working on any projects?? I hope so. Let's get through January!

This happens to me too sometimes, then suddenly I have TONS of things I want to blog about. It'll happen for you too!

I LOVE all your little birdies.

Jane, I think your brain just froze from the wicked Chicago weather! Come Spring, you'll be posting like a madwoman. If I were you, that would be my story and I would stick to it. Maybe you'll get a mini vacation somewhere warm out of it lol. I love to come visit you no matter what you are posting about, so don't be a stranger. Hugs, Kathy

Yes, I have noticed that you have been MIA! :-) But that's ok too, because we need to blog, as feels best for us. If we get "blog blocked," that cool too! The Muse will be flying back on our shoulder at any minute.

Nothing going on in your life?!? Dear One, do you think there is anything going on in my life? -giggles- We all feel the same way. [Especially when we read some fab-fab-fab-blogs which are super-super-duuuuper with living in foreign lands and etc. -giggles-]

But regular folks just don't have super-duper-stuff going on 24/7 and a good thing that is. Imho, anyway. I get tired out in no time!!!

I took decorations down a little at a time, but we still don't have [fake] tree down. He keeps wanting to do it, and I keep hating to do the put-ornaments-away dance.<--Lazzzzy!

Plus, have to put all the total stuff away, upstairs. I get stuff upstairs and then stop. lol. Somehow, all that stuff doesn't magically put itself in the closet! How rude, hu? ,-)

Reading 3 books at once!! Super!!!!

Guess what? I've lost my reading spark. -le sigh- Now you need to send some reading spark, back over to me. I really, really don't want to lose it. And I have a zillion books sitting there, waiting for me. Eeeek!

Please do feel free to stop by the new blog, any time. And chat with us, in Comments too. It's a learning process, over at Gals With Grandmother Faces and we need all the input we can get. :-) Even though you certainly don't yet have a Grandmother Face.

Hugs...

I love it that you are posting about just daily life stuff. It's fun to get to know someone in their day to day routine with just simple, homey stuff.

Janie, I think you and I have been in the same boat- I have no incentive to post or do much of anything. I finally got the Xmas stuff down and boxed up, but it's all still in the dining room waiting to go up to the attic. Then I am dealing with Mr. S., who has hurt his knee and has been hobbling around the house for over a week. This guy can't take pain or discomfort and he is driving me nuts. aaahhh.... The house is a wreck, laundry is piled up, I am overwhelmed! I think I need a vacation in warm weather...

I think a lot of us go thru this. sometimes we just need to recharge. The cold weather and lack of the beauty of the Christmas decor had me feeling really bummy after Christmas. no ideas, and everything looked (and still does) blah! Just hearing from you is great. You've been busy!
big hugs,
Debra

Great to hear from you, Jane! For someone who has "blogger's block", you sure did a fantastic job of finding some things to write about! Paula Deen's cooking not healthly??? I think the yumminess of it makes up for that!:)

I found the lady's blog, which you told me of... by clicking on it, on your blog. Thank you. She looks like a honey!

Expect! -moan- -groan- -sigh- She's so tiny!!!!!!!! Not fair. Not fair. She looks super fabulous. Not fair. Not fair. -gigggles-

But of course I'll not let that keep me away. With luck, she can be an inspiration to me. :-)

Hi Janie, Nice to see you posted again and I love your birds! I know how this weather can be lazy-ing. I know that's not a word but that's what I mean, lol. We don't even have snow but we have ice at the bottom of the pool slide. Maybe I'll post that for tomorrow's Outdoor Wed. Speaking of mantel top decor, check out mine which I posted for Tabletop Tues. And yep, I've been cooking since we got back from Fl. last Sunday. Hope you stay warm indoors...Christine

Hi Janie,
I think a little time off and contemplation is a good thing. I don't consider that a block. After Christmas I always seem a little flat. I had high hopes to plant an herb garden this weekend (yes in California we don't have to fight that blasted weather) and lo and behold the garden center was barren. I ended up with one scrawny rosemary and a garlic that I have no idea what to do with. So I shall try again this weekend. We shall see. Until then I send you magic inspiration to get your creativity flowing...it's there it's just hiding from the cold ;)

I have blog block almost every day of the year it seems...but you? no way! Every post you write is wonderful...and yes, Winter can do this to us. January always seems a little mundane and dark compared to the joys of Christmas.
But I know you will soldier on and find somethingbeautiful to tell us about, to photograph, to create! Of that I have no doubt!
Love,
Sue

Sue said...

You really sound like you have a case of the winter "blahs"! You need to run right over to my blog post today, read and follow the instructions:)

I love it when the decorations are down. I also love it when they go up...but I really like to get back to sparse for a while.

I run into the same problem about cooking. I love it, but with just 2 of us...and one of us wanting to take off 15 pounds...it isn't as much fun as it used to be. I like to bake, but I eat way to much when it is here.

Ok Janie... here I go... there is nothing mundane about you or your posts! This is a great one, I love seeing what is going on day~ to~day in your life... you are a very creative, talented lady and I am sure a super cook! I don't think a post needs to be about extraordinary things... little things that make you happy are the most precious of all... also, I want you to quit saying you need something to brood or worry about!!! Life is good... Spring is coming... okay, I will get off my soapbox now... you are just about the sweetest lady I know... your comments always make me happy...I don't think any of us needs to post every day just to say we posted something... remember my favorite quote when trying to think about what you want to post... "follow your heart... it knows the way"... love to you! xoxo Julie Marie

Well...for someone who has bloggers block...I was enthralled by what you wrote! Enjoyed ever moment and could related to a lot of your feelings. The cooking, the feeling of loss when the Christmas decor goes, the fear of failure or of criticism..all of it.
I didn't blog for days and days either..just ...plain old apathy with me! Ok...laziness! :)
Hugs, and don't you worry about one thing!
I picture snow as white and pristine so let me keep that picture in my head..ok? :):) I tend to forget how it really is with snow when I am longing to be in it!

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. That is why I am blogging about France, because it makes me feel happy.
I get the element of failure in my head too. It is so frustrating because you know you can do it. But the "what if" sets in, then the procrastination. I pray you get some creative juices going.
Blessings to you.

I've had blog blocks too. It just happens. I enter every new project with this fear that somehow, I'm going to be found out, that I wlll fail as a creative person. I've failed a few projects, but always learn something new. I threw out a couple of projects yesterday that I kept hanging up in the studio because, sure maybe they don't work right, but they had some redeeming quality about them.

thank you for the tip on the mantle party, I might have a look see also. I tend to get in a pattern of the same old thing.

Hi Jane,
I've been in a blogger's block too. Now that the holiday is over and my Christmas projects are put away I find myself not being motivated to create. I started my guest room redo and I am making good progress but I need to get my sewing machine out to make window treatments and I'm not feeling it. So I guess what I'm trying to say is I know how you're feeling. Keeping a blog updated takes a lot of work, so consider yourself on vacation!

Interesting that you mention a fear of losing your love of cooking. I worry about that a lot. With the kids away and both Hank and I trying to watch our collective weight, that I've lost a lot of the "joy of cooking" that I used to have. Cooking healthy food just isn't NEARLY as much fun as baking cakes and pies and frying chicken and steak and gravy...and...Oh GOSH, I'm working myself into a STATE! Anyhow, I know just what you mean.

Hi Jane, congrats on the weight loss:) I miss my Christmas lights too, it ended way too soon for me this year. I was so enjoying the lazy days, now I have to be up at 6am every morning to get Kristen out to school. January can be rather blah, hopefully surfing blogs and finding some good decorating inspiration will help ;) Have a great day.

Jane, would you believe I STILL have a box of Chrismas decorations in my kitchen???? I take the time I have when taking down decorations to clean and re-arrange things in the rooms so it takes so much longer. And I just bought a little cabinet that needed painting so of course that meant that the bathroom, bedroom and hallway had to be re-arranged for this silly piece. Do you do this too or am I just crazy:)It is probably just me. Pray for me...

January is an intimidating month, really. The holidays are over. A whole new year looms before us. I am the same way: if there is an element of failure, I balk like a donkey. Hi Jane,
I am glad I stopped by to read your post. I have been in slow motion lately. I usually have several projects going at once. I just took a time out last week and signed up for a sacred images day. It was just meditation and artwork. Totally wonderful. What I realized is that we don't always have to be doing something. Where did this come from, I don't know. I was questioning why I blog, why I create art, and where my passion is. After some thought I realized that being in the white space between the lyrics in our music is part of the process. Perhaps when we are changing direction, we just need to be for a while.

OMG, you inspired me to write. I have been MIA from leaving comments because I am lost in another world. I know it is 2010, but I am not ready to begin.

You are always inspiring Jane.

By the way, I was just looking at your snowed in lake house post - LOVELY!!! As you know I live in Michigan too. As much as I dislike winter I must admit we do have gorgeous lakes, don't we? Your lake house is so pretty and the snow looks gorgeous in your picture.

I feel the same January blahs as you do but fortunately, I think they're lifting! I cooked up a storm yesterday, even bringing dinner to friends. Hi Jane,
Seems many of us are suffering from the post Christmas blahs.
I'm mooching about the house, fluffing, rearranging and reading. When the cabin fever gets too much I venture outside, into all that cold white stuff and take my camera with me. I've joined a couple of new (to me) photography meme's.
Spring will be here before we know it.
'Til then enjoy the peace & quiet and some good books.

January is a weird month for me also, don't know quite what to do with myself. Always seems as though my creativity goes out the window and I just want to relax. Cooking and books are a great way to do this. It's been so cold here (for us anyway) that I tend to cook early, so that I can avoid a cold kitchen. Our heaters just are powerful enough for this kind of cold, they're using to cooling the house not heating it. lol

Good morning, Jane. I really enjoyed this post, and took the opportunity to read some of your earlier posts too (I'm working away from home this week, and I have bags of time in the evening!)
I think we all have 'dry' periods when the words just don't flow. I believe it's important then to just turn your attention elsewhere for a bit - the words will come back.
What am I doing to get through January?.......working, knitting a baby blanket, starting a new cross stitch of some blue and white china.

"You forgot one thing" interrupted Knitty's husband, the Voice of Reason and Honesty, "you forgot to mention you were in a small, private room being treated for a delusional disorder."
"Harummmph!" snorted Knitty. "At least the room was white. And soft. Blondie likes white. She would have visited me if I had been allowed visitors."

Jane, I've missed you (along with my mind) and understand completely the ups and downs of finding things to say. :)

Jane, this post was great!

I'm very blog-challenged right now -- AND I haven't even gotten Christmas dec taken down and packed away because of dealing with all the funeral "stuff" for my Mom last week -- just went from one event or one houseful of people to another.

It's a low sort of week for me -- feeling sick, getting used to Mom being gone, empty-nesting again --- and I'm going to have to kick myself HARD in the behind (which is a nice big target!) to get motivated and moving once more.

It happens. Life ebbs and flows. If it were all exciting all the time, we'd all be exhausted!

Plus -- I think January is one of those months where we all slow down. It's sort of the definition of anti-climax.

The fun part of blogging is that it is not mandatory! Do it when you want to -- and if there are more posts like this one, that's OK -- this one was great!

I have had a serious case of the "blahs" this past month and just can't get motivated to do much of anything useful (speaking of...can you send Emily over?! I'll gladly pay her. :-). My job has been a bear so I'm going to blame that for my funk. I didn't even want to go to a thrift store we parked in front of this weekend...can you imagine?!? It sounds like you're doing better than me with your "to do" list -- you'll have plenty of blog material in no time. Besides...there are no rules about how much/often you have to write on your blog. That's one of the many things that makes blogging so great. :-) xo, Laura

I get blogger's block, too. Between the after-Christmas letdown and the cold and snowy weather here in New England, it's hard to find things to blog about. During this time, I usually start vacation planning. I also like to think about gardening and what I'm going to do outside in the deck for the summer. It helps brighten my outlook, as I need something to look forward to after a long, cold winter.

So glad you are back posting again. Would you like to borrow my Writer's Blocks?

Sometimes I think winter weather can put a damper on things but soon it will be spring and it will be all blooming again.

Blessings to you friend,

Jo

Happy New Year Blondie! I've enjoyed this post, totally hits my nail with the hammer! Although, I'm still looking at my lights in the evening. Yes, my husband is crazy about them too. I'm looking forward to packing them up soon and getting the carpets cleaned and doing some purging of my own. :) Thanks for the encouragement tonight! I've kinda been MIA on and off the past six months...have missed everyone! You have a super week and keep on cookin! You're right, sometimes we do quit doing some of the things we adored when we were younger as we mature... :) I'm wanting to bake some Madeleines soon...you've just convinced me that it's still worth it! :) Thanks! ~CC Catherine

Happy New Year!

I felt the same when I returned from France. So much goes on at Christmas time that getting back to a normal routine again seems to take days to happen! We've had days when we have been snowed in and I have to say that we have enjoyed that.

Today it is beginning melting slowly...
Have a lovely weekend
Warm wishes

Hello
I always get the blues this time of year...Christmas is over and putting it all away makes everything look bland and bare. plus this gray Chicago weather gets to me...Come see me and we can complain together :)
